The Dark Ages seem like a mysterious time in history. The Roman army left the people to rule themselves, there are fewer clues about them. But evidence is growing about living by the rivers and in the hills nearby. This is a chance to join a friendly group to find out more. Castleford is famous for its Roman connections, but what happened after the Roman Army left? The Britons were still here and built new kingdoms, like Elmet. They thrived and were confronted by the Anglo Saxons and then Vikings. How much do we know about them? What religion did they follow? How did they exploit the landscape built during Roman times all around them? Our course will be based on talks that soon lead to discussion allowing learners to have their own ideas about the evidence. The atmosphere is fun and chatty, you don’t need to have any prior knowledge. We will use local resources such as the museum in Castleford and examples from the Yorkshire Landscape.
